Forti Foods' MREs combat malnutrition in Muna IDP Camp with nutritious, culturally relevant, and shelf-stable meals
Alhaji Gani Mustapha sits outside his shelter in Muna IDP Camp, the weight of survival heavy on his shoulders. A father of sixteen, his daily battle isn’t just against displacement but against hunger itself. With food scarcity rampant and resources limited, his household often goes without a single proper meal in a day. His two-year-old son, frail and weak, suffers from Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM), a crisis that threatens his survival.
Muna Camp, home to approximately 36,000 people, is a stark reflection of Nigeria’s growing food insecurity problem. 20% of children under six suffer from malnutrition, their futures hanging by a thread. The existing food relief—often perishable and unfamiliar—fails to provide sustained nourishment. Families like Alhaji Gani’s face a grim reality: eat food they don’t recognize, or go hungry.
Recognizing this dire need, Forti Foods emerged with a mission to bridge the gap.
With support from the School for Social Entrepreneurs (SSE) in London, Forti Foods was able to take a crucial first step—visiting Muna Camp to capture the reality of the crisis firsthand. This funding enabled us to conduct in-depth fact-finding, engaging directly with beneficiaries to understand what they were missing and the challenges within the existing aid system. What we discovered went beyond just food insecurity—people weren’t only hungry; they lacked access to meals that could sustain their health in the long term. Malnutrition was a persistent, complex issue, exacerbated by inadequate long term nutrition-focused interventions.
Organisations like the Red Cross played a vital role in managing Muna Camp, providing healthcare, and distributing food aid. However, the need for more sustainable, fortified, and culturally relevant nutrition solutions remained critical. The insights we gathered during our visit shaped the development of Forti Foods’ Meals Ready to Eat (MREs)—fortified with essential vitamins and minerals to provide comprehensive nourishment, particularly for those battling severe acute malnutrition (SAM).
For individuals like Alhaji Gani and thousands of others in similar situations, access to the right nutrition can mean the difference between survival and further deterioration. While we did not distribute meals during our visit, our research laid the foundation for a solution designed to meet the real needs of vulnerable communities.
The road to eradicating malnutrition in Nigeria’s IDP camps and underserved communities is long, but with innovation, research-driven solutions, and the dedication of partners, a future without hidden hunger is within reach.
